This late 1800's barn is a classic example of New England agricultural architecture
in Vermont. The land and structure were given to the City of
Burlington in the mid 1900's for the city's
Schmanska Park.
It is one of the last
agricultural buildings of its kind still standing within the city limits. The
Barn has been renovated to provide meeting and storage rooms and restroom
facilities all of which are handicapped accessible. Energy conserving
measures were incorporated into the design in addition to correcting
significant structural and moisture problems. These were designed within historic preservation requirements. Existing siding, trim, cupola and other historic features were maintained.
A fire to the
barn after the design process had
already begun posed another challenge, however the
project was completed within the limited time and budget constraints.
